Police warn of home improvement scams

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah-Chatham Metro Police say a group of scammers who have be operating in nearby cities may be targeting Savannah.

Those posing as home improvement company workers are knocking on people's doors offering to do repairs. While unsuspecting homeowners are talking to the scammer at the front door, others are getting into the home through other doors and stealing items, according to police.

Some items stolen in Spartanburg, S.C., have been pawned in Savannah. Police suspect some of the scam artists could be focusing on residents here.

Scammers offer to sell and install linoleum flooring or carpet stretching. Other services include asphalt paving, exterior house painting.

Police recommend that residents avoid getting into long conversations with sales people; check to make sure no one has entered other areas of the house; and call 911 to report the action immediately.
