Planning under way for new Effingham Co. Jail

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) - The new Effingham Co. Jail has been approved and planning is under way. Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie told WTOC how it is going and why it is so important.

"Right now we're spending $30 to $45 a day housing inmates in other areas. I haven't checked the number this morning but yesterday I had 150 inmates. I can only house 130 in my jail. With classification, I may have a few beds open and get a new inmate in, but I cannot put him in that location, so I have to ship him out to another jail," said McDuffie.

The Old Springfield Central Elementary School and the current location are among the sites being considered for the new jail.
