Bluffton woman receives award at White House

WASHINGTON (WTOC) - President Obama received a big hug from Bluffton's own Ida Martin on Oct. 20. She was one of only 13 from around the country honored with the Presidential Citizens Medal.

Martin has devoted her life giving food, clothing, and anything else she can give through her Bluffton self help organization, which she started from her own home.  The President said that we need to learn from her example.

"I hope they inspire us to put ourselves in another person's shoes. and I hope that years from now, when they retell the story of our time, they will say that we too lent a hand to our neighbor in need," said President Obama.

Martins work is not done yet. She is putting the finishing touches on her new facility in the lowcountry.
