HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - Arnold Palmer returned to Hilton Head Island on Oct. 20. The World Golf Hall of Fame member was back for the grand re-opening of the Wexford Plantation golf course, which his design company recently retooled.
Palmer led a tour of the renovated grounds, hit a ceremonial opening tee shot, and held a golf clinic with Wexford members. He enjoyed being back where he won the very first Heritage in 1969.
"I do like Hilton Head. I think it's one of the great spots I have been. My wife, Winnie, who passed away back in '97, she loved it here. She was a big fan. If there was a chance, she would have had me here too and we probably would have lived here," said Palmer.
Hilton Head Mayor Drew Laughlin proclaimed Oct. 20 to be Arnold Palmer Day in Hilton Head in honor of the golfer's return.
