Police say gang activity down in Savannah

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police say gang numbers are down.

The FBI is expected to release a gang assessment report sometime this month. The last national survey was done in 2008.

SCMPD's Star Cpl. Udon Carter said the Savannah-Chatham area does not have traditional gangs like those of other cities. He said there are local street gangs or neighborhood-based street gangs, with members as young as middle schoolers.

"Overall, in our neighborhoods in Savannah both are down; violence and gang activity are down due to our aggressive approach," Carter said.

Police are using student resource officers at schools, the juvenile court system, neighborhood groups and churches to help fight gang activity.
