Martin de Poores Society Christmas Party

Some very caring volunteers make it possible for the Martin de Porres Society to make sure the season is merry and bright for hundreds of kids. They come from all over the Coastal Empire, and 550 inner city children are celebrating Christmas with neighbors at Savannah's Benedictine School. Old friends, and new ones.

Celandria Armstrong came with her family. "I think it's a great opportunity for people to come together and share and get to know people who they never knew," she said.

Yolanda Negron doesn't just look like Mrs. Claus, as the founder of the Martin de Porres Society, she's all about the Christmas spirit, especially when it comes to children. "I just want to tell them how special they are, and they are giving us this moment," she said.

Since 1985, volunteers with the society have been making sure each child has lunch and toys for Christmas. In addition to that, each child will take home a bag containing a blanket, toiletries, snacks and even a dictionary for each.

"We felt like we needed to share with them to show them that we care and to give them things they can use throughout the year," said volunteer Gail Brown.

It's why Troy Graham, who came here as a child, comes back now to volunteer. "Back in the day, my family didn't have and now we have and I can come back and give thanks," he said.

"We are a family and we have to share good moments and that is the reason I have this Christmas," said Yolanda Negron.

Several businesses and more than 100 volunteers helped put on the Christmas party.
