Many Savannahians will ring in the New Year at City Market tonight. But for those who want to stay indoors, they can expect one of the biggest New Year's celebrations ever. After spending last year without any fireworks, this year'ss display will be the biggest ever. "People definitely missed it and the hotels, the restaurants," said Scott Searcy of the Savannah Waterfront Association. "It's just another added bonus for visitors and locals in Savannah."
Another bonus around town will be for those who will get the chance to enjoy the first-ever formal event held by the Weston River Front Resort. As they set the stage for live entertainment under all the lights you can imagine, back across the river the annual New Year's party at the Hyatt is a tradition that's already sold out. "The troops are home from Iraq, people are in a festive mood, the economy seems to be going in the right direction, and people want to celebrate," said general manager Sheldon Fox.
Wherever you're planning to celebrate, you'll have time to catch the fireworks, which don't begin till 12:10am. "At the stoke of midnight, people are watching the TV or the ball drop, and to give them that moment to have that last toast and give a hug or a kiss to that special someone and step outside and see a fireworks display," explained the Waterfront Association's Searcy.
If you're interested in going to a black-tie event, the Westin still has some tickets left for their New Year's Gala. The Hyatt is sold out. If you want to come out and start your New Year with a bang, without spending any money, River Street is one of the better locations to see the fireworks.
