SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - One of Savannah's historic squares is getting a makeover.
A two month construction project is currently underway on Chippewa Square, located on Bull St. between Oglethorpe and Liberty.
Construction began Oct. 24, renovating the existing landscape, which is nearly 30 years old. Crews are cutting down trees and overgrown vegetation, replacing benches and trash receptacles, and fixing cobblestone walkways.
Director of the Park and Tree department, Jerry Flemming, said the renovation will increase air flow and sunlight to the square, making it safer and more attractive to tourists.
"The squares are the crown jewels of Savannah. They are our pride and joy, which is why tourists come here year after year," said Flemming.
Construction is expected to be complete by Christmas.
