STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Georgia First Lady Sandra Deal read to some children at Statesboro's Safe Haven Domestic Violence Shelter on Oct. 26. The youngsters that Mrs. Deal met are living with their moms as the women get counseling and job training to eventually lead their families. The First Lady says it is also important to support the children through the ordeal.

"It's important to give them as normal a life as we can and give them a place of safety where they can stay and not be in danger," said Deal.

Safe Haven has been helping women for almost 20 years. The deals are no strangers to the Statesboro area. The Governor's parents were born and raised in Bulloch county.
