BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) - The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is warning residents to beware of phone calls requesting money to benefit the South Carolina Sheriff's Association.
The South Carolina Sheriff's Association has discovered that telemarketers are fraudulently soliciting funds. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office reminds residents that the sheriff's association does not solicit contributions by telephone or through telemarketers.
The sheriff's association does hold membership drives on a regular basis. They are typically in the spring and fall and then in conjunction with quarterly newsletter mailings. They are legitimate because they will always be done by mail and will include the sheriff's association logo, according to the sheriff's office.
Anyone who gets a telemarketing call from someone claiming to be from the sheriff's association should hang up and contact the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office at 843.524.2777.
