Port Wentworth City Council not explaining why fire chief left

PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC) - Controversy is brewing in Port Wentworth after the fire chief disappeared this summer. Greg Long stopped working for the city but the city council will not explain why. Cpt. Wesley Bates has been running the department but some people are now questioning his record after learning he served time in prison for armed robbery. The city council would not discuss any of it at their meeting on Oct. 27.

"Just give us time to find out what is going on. We'll go by our personnel policy and handle this the way it should be handled," Gary Norton, Port Wentworth City Council.

Norton says people should wait to find out all of the information before they pass judgment. He would not elaborate on when any decisions would be made.
