Fire Chief disappears, new man in charge scrutinized

PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC) -

The Port Wentworth Fire Department is under the microscope after longtime Fire Chief Long stopped working for the city with no explanation.

And now the Captain in charge is under scrutiny for for his criminal record.

Captain Wesley Bates served time for armed robbery over ten years ago.

According to his attorney Doug Andrews, he technically has no convictions on his record because of the Georgia First Offender Act.

"Are we to criticize him because he has had such great success and been good in his job and dedicated? Why should we want to take him down because he made a mistake in the past? That is just not right," Andrews said.

At Thursday night's Port Wentworth City Council meeting, the council wouldn't talk about the issue. They only said they are looking into it and will follow their personnell policy.

Bates also has one pending D.U.I. If he's convicted of that, it could be a bigger problem because he may not be allowed to drive the fire engines.
