Phony BRAC List Circulates on Net

The next round of base realignment and closures (BRAC) scheduled for 2005 is expected to effect 25 percent of our nation's military bases. But, recently there's been a number of phony base closing lists circulating on the internet. In fact, members of Beaufort's Military Enhancement Committee (MEC) say they've received phone calls from concerned citizens about these lists.

Although none of Beaufort's Tri-command, including the Marine Corps Air Station, Parris Island, or the Naval Hospital has been on any of the lists, they say it hurts their efforts to save the bases.

"It has a detrimental effect on our efforts because we still need to generate some more money, and it might give people a false sense of security that we're not on the list at all and that's not true," explained the MEC's John Payne. Every major installation will be looked at and we have three installations in Beaufort."

The Department of Defense's actual BRAC list is not expected to be published until 2005.
