SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Eight students celebrated graduating from the Peace Officer Academy at Savannah Tech on Oct. 31.
The students graduated in honor of Officer Willie Samual Smith, a fallen officer with Savannah-Chatham Metro Police. Each year, the outgoing class selects a fallen officer to remember as they go on to become state certified peace officers. To get to this point, students underwent hours of course work over 18 weeks. The graduates say they are excited to go out and help the community.
"They have background experience, the details they need to show us. They pass that down to us and we plan to pass that on to others someday. We hope that we can be there for them and show them how to go out and do the same things that we're about to go do," said Jesse Allen, graduate.
This is the ninth group of students to complete the program since it started in 2009.
