SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Five days from now we will be putting all of our months of training to the test. This Saturday, I am joining 23,000 other runners for the inaugural Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and Half Marathon. I admit that I am very anxious right now. So, I went to one of my favorite experts to get some tips for everyone taking on this awesome challenge. Robert Espinoza, the owner of Fleet Feet Sports, who is also one of the organizers for the race, told me to devote this week to resting and eating. "You should make sure you stay off your feet as much as possible. You don't need to go and run much anymore. No matter how much you do this week, it will not make a difference. It will not help your physical fitness for the run."
This tip will undoubtedly be one of the hardest to do, but our rest must include at least two nights of good sleep. "You are not going to sleep the night before so make sure you get two nights of good sleep in. So on race day, if you cannot sleep, you won't have to worry about that because you've already gotten two good nights of sleep," explains Espinoza.
This week, he also advises us to forget about any weight loss plans. If we haven't lost those unwanted pounds yet, it is too late now. This week we should be concentrating on eating well- balanced meals. "Make sure you are eating. This is not the time to drop any extras weight before the race. This is time for you to eat foods that you are used to. Start carb loading or eating foods that make you feel comfortable two or three nights before, not the night before the event. Don't just try to go the night before and think you can just eat a bunch of spaghetti and think you are going to feel good the next day. If you can eat small portions leading up to race, then the night before, eat your lucky food you will be fine," adds Espinoza.
Don't forget we are your Rock 'n' Roll Station. Every day, Robert Espinoza will be giving valuable tips that will make all the difference once we get among that sea of 23,000 at the starting line bright and early on Saturday.
