Bellville post office slated to close, Daisy's remains open

CLAXTON, GA (WTOC) -

The news hit many in Bellville like a ton of bricks. The U.S. Postal Service announced they plan to close the town's contracted post office at the end of the year. Bernie Anderson's store sits right next to the post office.

"It's kind of a visiting place but it's convenient for the people who use it too," Anderson said. "If we don't have this one, it's 5 miles to the next post office."

Forty years ago, the Postal Service pulled its postmaster and dropped Bellville down to a contracted office to save money. The contracted operator staffs the window part time and keeps it open during the day. Even that would end in December.

The announcement of the closing took people here by surprise. They said they weren't even aware they were on any list of consideration. They and their neighbors were all concerned about a different post office in Evans County a few miles down the road.

Daisy's post office remains open after hearings in the spring and warnings they're on a list to possibly close. Daisy's mayor said no news is good news to them.

"They told us we'd hear something by the end of September and we haven't heard anything. So now, we've got a 60 days window. We know it would be the first of the year at least," explained Mayor Inman Brown.

Brown said folks in Daisy aren't breathing any sigh of relief yet. Meanwhile, Anderson said Bellville will do all it can to keep their office open.

In an email to town leaders, the Postal Service suggested they find a local business that would allow a Village Post Office in their establishment. A rural carrier would drop mail there and customers would have access to it during the business's hours of operation. Anderson said he'd consider making such an offer if the office is closed otherwise.
