Fit Club: Surviving the holidays

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Thanksgiving dinner is just around the corner, then holiday parties and Christmas.

We have tips on how to keep your fitness goals this Thanksgiving and after.

The secret to fighting the holiday bulge is to have a plan.

First, as you prepare your Thanksgiving menu, find ways to turn those family favorites into low-fat or even low-sugar dishes, says Kristine Hammond at Memorial Health.

"When making all these foods that are traditional in the south, try to not use all the heavy whipping cream, use skim milk, use yogurt and applesauce instead of oils in baked goods. There are a lot of alternatives out there," said Hammond.

On Thanksgiving Day, instead sitting around the house all day watching TV, spend some time outdoors to help offset the extra calories you will eat.

"In the south, especially, people tend to focus on the food and meals especially when getting together. With obesity becoming [an] epidemic, we need to get into some different habits," said Hammond. "Be a role model and do some walking, play touch football, jump rope to get everybody moving."

Eating yourself into a coma seems inevitable during the holidays, but there are ways to tricking yourself into thinking you are eating more.

"Grab the smaller plate, when it looks full your brain is going to think it is getting more. A smaller plate versus a bigger plate, that has a little bit on it will save you a lot of calories."

Hammond recommends waiting 10 minutes before going back for seconds and pulling away from the dining table before you feel full.

Most importantly don't stress too much about what you eat, it's a special occasion, so have fun and eat a little of anything you want. Moderation is key to surviving the holidays.
