New Gift Shop Provides Special-Needs Training

Those with disabilities are showing off their abilities in the Low Country as they open a new business. Beaufort County Disability and Special Needs clients in Beaufort County are working hard, making crafts and learning new job skills to help them run their new gift shop called Old Shell Gifts in Port Royal.

It's a business many are hoping will help them learn the skills they need to succeed. "The idea is to provide training," said Rickey Green, Sr., director of Beaufort County Disability and Special Needs. "To provide an employment atmosphere where the consumers we serve can get the same skills in learning to operate a business, learning to provide customer assistance, to taking care of plants, how to make and sell crafts."

The Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities paid for the business with a $23,000 grant. All proceeds will go back into operating the store. It's located at 1804 Old Shell Rd, and open Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
