Man shot near intersection, dies in front yard of home, police say

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A Charlotte man died after he was shot on Willard Street Thursday afternoon.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say the shooting happened at 2:16 p.m. in the front yard of 4617 Willard Street in the Freedom Drive area.

Craig Allen Leverette Jr., 20, died shortly after arrival by paramedics at Carolinas Medical Center Main, police said.

Leverette was shot near the intersection of Lewiston Avenue and Willard Street. He ran down Willard Street and collapsed in the front yard of 4617 Willard Street from his gunshot wound.

Alquez Lee Thompson, 17, is charged with murder, interference with an electronic monitoring device, possession of a handgun by a minor and carrying a concealed weapon, police said.

Eyewitnesses told police several shots had been fired in the area.

At least one man has been taken into police custody in connection with the shooting.

Police believe the man and Leverette were known to each other.

The incident remains under investigation.
