SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Many military families are having to cope with the loss of a loved one -- and nothing can fill that void. But Operation Snowball Express is trying to brighten the holidays for 1,700 people, including families from in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry.
It may not be Santa's sleigh, but it's bringing some good boys and girls on the trip of a lifetime.
These are children of soldiers who have died while serving their country. They boarded planes known as the Snowball Express for an all-expense paid trip to Dallas/Fort Worth.
Their journey is sponsored by more than 1,000 individual and corporate volunteers who support the 1,700 children and spouses of fallen soldiers.
American Airlines and American Eagle has donated nine jets for Operation Snowball Express this year.
Exxon supplied the fuel. The flight crews even gave their own time to make the trip. Families will attend a concert by actor Gary Sinise and visit Six Flags.
