Top world leaders will be making their way to the Coastal Empire in June for the G-8 summit, and they'll need some way to get around. Today, they unveiled the mode of transportation that will be used at the Savannah Trade and Convention Center.
The Global Electric Motor car or GEM will ferry the visiting dignitaries around Sea Island. The 72-volt vehicle has a top speed of 35 miles per hour and can drive as far as 30 miles before being recharged. Car were specifically designed for the President and the other dignitaries. "Each car is designed for that particular nation's leader and it will be designed in that nation's flag, so they'll be very easily recognizable, who's in the vehicle just by looking at the vehicle," explained summit spokesperson Barry Bennett.
The cars were made by DaimlerChrysler with designs from Digital Image Color Supergraphics, a Savannah-based business.
