New Hilton Head bike panel gets to work

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - Hilton Head Island has launched a Bicycle Advisory Committee that's made up of nearly 25 local volunteers.

The panel includes members of the town staff, chamber of commerce, Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, bike shop retailers and rental businesses, real estate agencies, advocacy and marketing groups.

The committee will first focus on seven projects that are consistent with the League of American Bicyclists "Five E's," which stand for Enforcement, Encouragement, Education, Evaluation-and-Planning and Engineering-and-Infrastructure, according to a news release.

The committee met in October for the first time. They plan to meet again in January. Committee members have been deployed to work on projects and make progress in advance of the next Bicycle Advisory Committee meeting in January, 2012, but there is still room for community input and participation.

The group has subcommittees that are tasked with specific projects, which include: develop a local bicycle information website; find friendly ways to enforce bike laws; implement Safe Routes to School program; education visitors about bike, driver and pedestrian safety; make major events on Hilton Head Island bicycle friendly; create memorable bicycling events; create a Hilton Head master plan for bicycles and biking.

There is still space available for participation and input. To find out more, contact the committee co-chairs Frank Babel at or David Zunker at
