SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Some customers who have put store merchandise on layaway are getting a surprise. Someone else is paying off their balanced owed.
It's a trend that may have started recently with one small donation in Michigan, but "layaway angels" have now hit Chatham and surrounding counties.
"They don't want anything. They don't want to be recognized. Everyone I've talked to. They don't want anyone to know what they've done," said store manager Steve Marsh.
The anonymous shoppers are paying off layaways for strangers. A Savannah K-mart has been home to more than a few of these generous donations.
"It's surprising, and they just don't know what to say. they can't believe that there are people out there like that who will come in and anonymously do these things," he said.
Families have been getting an unexpected call from K-mart telling them to pick up their layaway orders.
The donors are just average Joes from all economic backgrounds. They've already donated more than $2,000 to this store alone.
"Christmas is about the children, and for everybody to have the heart to make sure that they have a good Christmas is really an amazing thing," said shopper Laura Memory.
Even the week before Christmas, layaway angels continue to bless families in need.
They're making the holidays special for the ones who need it most. To join in the spirit of giving this holiday season, simply visit a local K-mart and ask a manager how you can help.
