STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

The Statesboro Fire Department announced Wednesday that one of their firefighters has died.

James Adam Mock, 27, succumbed to a sudden and unexpected illness, according to the fire department.

The joined the department in June 2005.

Mock was promoted to fire inspector in November. He held several fire service certifications. He earned the Medal of Achievement in 2011.

He recently graduated from Ogeechee Technical College with an Associate's Degree in Fire Science.

The Statesboro Fire Dept. said in a statement:

Inspector Mock served Statesboro and the Bulloch County Community with Honor and Integrity and will be dearly missed by all that knew him and worked alongside of him as brother Firefighters.  Adam was a kind and compassionate professional that never lost a friend and always was there to offer a kind smile and helping hand. There is a void left from the Statesboro Fire Department when God decided to call Adam home, we think Heaven needed another Hero on his streets of gold. Please keep the Mock family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

The visitation will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Family Resource Center in Sylvania. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church at 214 S. Main St. in Sylvania.
