For example, a with cardboard packaging for a 72-inch flat screen TV or a new computer that's sitting in the garage or trashcan tips off thieves who are looking for opportunities to steal.

Police warn that even shredding those boxes and putting them into recycling bins isn't enough.

They recommend homeowners remove clearly labeled empty boxes from high-priced goods or store them out of sight for a week or two before discarding.

To help curb such thefts, the city will has several pickup centers around town to dispose of these boxes.
