SYLVANIA, GA (WTOC) -

Authorities say police officers shot and wounded a man after he drove through a road check and tried to injure two officers.

Around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, police officers in Rocky Ford were conducting a road check when the chase began. According to Screven County sheriff Mike Kile, a car driven by Stacey Kevin Olliff, of Statesboro, approached. As officers walked to Olliff's car, Kile said Olliff sped away and knocked one officer to the ground and nearly hit the second.

"From what we're told by Bulloch County, he is an habitual violator with a long criminal history," the sheriff stated.

Kile said the officers fired at the car to stop Olliff and wounded him in the neck. Olliff kept driving and the officers gave chase on Ga. Highway 17. Sheriff Kile said other officers and deputies blocked the intersection of Hwy. 17 and U.S. Highway 301 at Cooperville. When surrounded, Olliff surrendered. He was flown to Savannah for medical treatment and the sheriff said he was expected to recover and face multiple charges.

The GBI and the Screven County Sheriff's Office are looking into why Olliff ran and whether proper force was used to stop him.
