Red Cross helps Riceboro family after fire

RICEBORO, GA (WTOC) - A family is displaced after a fire damaged their Riceboro home Thursday morning.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross Disaster Action responded at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday to a fire at 3405 eastbound Cooper Highway in Liberty County.

Three adults and two children were displaced. The Red Cross is providing the family with emergency accommodations and financial help for food and clothing.

"I was nervous. I was scared. I was worried about my children and my grandchildren, but with the help of my brothers and my other family members we got through this," said fire victim Audrey Walthour. "My brother said it would be more hurtful for us, for them, to have to be planning a funeral for five people. You know, a house -- we can get that back, but you can never get back the lives you lost."

Investigators haven't said how the fire started.
