Suspect killed during robbery identified

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah-Chatham Metro Police said they have identified a gunman who was fatally shot Thursday morning by a Wendy's employee during a robbery of the Wilmington Island restaurant.

William Martin Clark, 27, of the 800 block of Wexler Street, was shot at about 12:50 a.m. when he pointed his pistol at a Wendy's worker who was armed with his own gun, according to police.

Two men with masks surprised a Wendy's employee as he was cleaning the store after closing. Police said they forced him at gunpoint into the office, where they took money and left.

The Wendy's employee then got his own handgun and walked outside into the parking lot. The suspects saw him with a gun, and Clark pointed the pistol at him and the employee fired, according to police.

The other suspect ran through parking lot of a nearby business and remains at large.

SCMPD K-9 and Forensics officers followed the route of the second suspect ran and have developed some leads.
