Savannah Kennel Club wins national award

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Savannah Kennel Club is the recipient of the AKC Community Achievement Award.

The award was given to the club for hosting the AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day on Sept. 18. More than 600 people attended and 225 dogs were registered for the event.

There had been several dog attacks around the Savannah area prior to the event, and the club wanted to teach the community how to prevent these incidents, according to the club.

The event featured police dog demonstrations, Canine Good Citizen tests, and Ask the Groomer, Ask the Vet and Ask the Trainer booths. More than 40 dogs participated in a event and between 75 and 100 dogs went through the agility obstacle course. The Humane Society for Greater Savannah offered vaccinations and micro chipping.

Elementary school students created artworks about what it means to be a responsible dog owner and prizes were awarded for the best works.

The Savannah Kennel Club received a certificate of appreciation and $1,000 as the recipient of the community achievement award.
