Deployment dates set for 2 Fort Stewart battalions

HINESVILLE, GA (WTOC) -

Dates have been scheduled for the deployment of 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment and 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment to Afghanistan.

The orders affect an estimated 1,500 troops and families from the Marne Division. This is the first time either unit has been deployed to Afghanistan, according to the public affairs office.

They served four tours to Iraq with the 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team most returned in October 2010 from year-long deployments there.

The 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, which consists of an estimated 800 soldiers, is scheduled to deploy in February, according to the public affairs office.

The battalion is part of the brigades heavy combat capability, which provides security to units doing village stability operations in Afghanistan.

The 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, which consists of an estimated 700 soldiers, is scheduled to deploy in April.

The battalion is part of a Stryker brigade combat team. They will increase the capability to carry out counter-insurgency operations and train Afghanistan National Security Forces, according to the public affairs office.

The Stryker brigade is deployed from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.
