SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

In 2011, customs took possession of five containers that were abandoned at the Port of the Savannah when the importing company went bankrupt. Those containers were filled with $1.114 million worth of sheets, pillow cases, bath robes and shirts. Now, the City of Savannah is working with the Salvation Army and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to get the contents of those containers into the hands of people who need them the most.

"This is one of the things that I am very happy to say on one of my very first days. Alderman Shabazz and I stand here before you and say thank you to all the entities that were involved in this," said Mayor Edna Jackson, Savannah.

"In lieu of having them go to auction, where they are sold, we have a national initiative. We are working with our local communities to ensure that goods that are usable get to people that need them," said Lisa Beth Brown, U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

U.S. Customs and Boarder Protection was prohibited by law from donating the goods directly to charity.
