
Savannah College of Art and Design Trustee and cofounder May Lewis Poetter died Wednesday at the age of 94.
Poetter, her husband, the late Paul Poetter; Richard Rowan, and SCAD President Paula Wallace; founded the college in September 1978.
Poetter served as SCAD's first admission representative, SCAD's first executive vice president for admission, and had served on the SCAD Board of Trustees since 1996.
Even more, May was a surrogate mother to many SCAD students and the animating spirit of the entire university, according to SCAD.
The president's office invites the SCAD community to submit tributes, comments, anecdotes and other remembrances of Poetter with the family by contacting Carmen Stowers at cstowers@scad.edu or by mail 622 Drayton St., Savannah, Ga. 31401.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, 54 Diamond Causeway.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the SCAD May and Paul Poetter Scholarship Fund, at P.O. Box 3146, Savannah, GA 31402.
