BLOOMINGDALE, GA (WTOC) -

Bloomingdale and Pooler fire departments responded to a house fire at 311 Oak St. in Bloomingdale around 7 a.m. Jan. 14.

The fire started from a shorted out window unit, according to Chief Ferman Tyler of the Bloomingdale fire dept.

Thomas Davis was living by himself in the home and was sleeping when the fire started. Smoke detectors alerted Davis of the fire, and he managed to get out of the burning house through a back door.

Neighbors called 911 when they realized the house was on fire.

"I was scared because I didn't know if anyone was inside the house. So I started banging on windows and trying to find something to break the window with because the front porch was on fire," says neighbor Scott England.

Fire crews were able to salvage some valuables from the home, but the house itself is a total loss.
