Man arrested in Liberty Co. murder case

An arrest has been made in the slaying of a Midway man.

The Liberty County Sheriff's Office said that Travon Walthour has been arrested and charged in the death of 19-year-old TJ Floyd. He is also charged with aggravated assault.

A person of interest was also taken into in custody on Tuesday. The sheriff's office said the slaying took place sometime after 11 p.m. Jan. 21.

According to the deputy's report, Floyd and a friend were supposed to meet someone on Cook Road to buy marijuana. The friend told deputies that after they made the transaction, the seller and two other men jumped them, robbed them and stabbed Floyd in the middle of the road, where he died. Floyd was found dead on hardtop part of the road in the 300 block of Cook Road in the Fleming Community. 

Investigators said the motive was probably robbery.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and police are still investigating. This is the first homicide in Liberty Co. this year.

A viewing for Floyd will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Gamble Funeral Home on Stephenson Avenue in Savannah. His funeral service takes place at 11 a.m. Friday at Lifespring Worship Center in Bloomingdale.
