Attempted abductions on Fort Stewart prove untrue

FORT STEWART, GA (WTOC) -

It didn't take long for the rumors to spread. The past two days there have been Facebook postings and many phone calls from worried parents, wondering about a possible attempted kidnapping on Fort Stewart. But Col. Kevin Milton, Garrison Commander at Fort Stewart, says many of those Facebook posts had little to no facts in them. Milton said that's because, as of right now, none of it is true.

Col. Milton said late Wednesday afternoon, Fort Stewart police noticed four children hanging out along Austin Road, near Britton Elementary School, which is located on post. The youths were elementary school age. Officers stopped to question the students, and that's when they claimed a car stopped near them and the person inside asked them to come over to the vehicle.

According to Col. Milton, Fort Stewart police immediately started canvassing the base, looking for the alleged car and suspect. But after investigators spoke with the children, and their parents, they determined that none of the stories matched up.

"As the investigation continued, several different descriptions of cars and suspects began to surface," explained Col. Milton. "Police investigated each thoroughly. Once more details came to light, it was determined that no abduction attempts had, in fact, been made."

In addition, Col. Milton said no other reports of attempted abductions have been reported to Fort Stewart police.

"We're very thankful that the juveniles brought this information to our attention," he said. "Unfortunately, we are not able to find any solid evidence that leads us to anything. In the meantime, we have increased patrols in the area, from where the report allegedly came from. But again, we have no suspect, nor do we believe these alleged abductions actually took place."

If there are any more reports of attempted abductions, Col. Milton said Fort Stewart Law Enforcement will investigate all of them. He also says they will continue to have increased police patrols on base until families feel safe.
