PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC) - After several delays in construction, the multi-million dollar viaduct project in Port Wentworth is finally complete.
A bridge dedication ceremony was held Jan. 28 for the viaduct that runs from Dorset Road to Bonnybridge Road along Georgia State route 25.
Both the northbound and southbound lanes of SR 25 were blocked off during construction as crews worked for nearly a year to repair an overpass bridge above the Norfolk Southern Railroad.
The Department of Transportation repaved the road and re-worked the drainage system.
"It was a lot of heartache and some bad words said about the viaduct, but it's done and we're excited about it," says Port Wentworth mayor Glenn Jones.
Port Wentworth residents and city officials attended the ceremony. The bridge is named after the late Hugh Carroll Butler, who was a member of the Port Wentworth city council for 20 years and served in the United States Air Force.
