SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
Chatham County Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission has approved site plans at the former Backus Cadillac dealership on Victory Drive. It is possible that Whole Foods grocery store is coming to Savannah to fill that spot.
The site has been vacant since Backus closed in 2009, and offers 60,000 square feet of retail space.
Tom Thomson, executive director of the Metropolitan Planning Commission, says if Whole Foods comes to Savannah, it will bring a boost to the local economy.
"We have to see vacant commercial properties and unfortunately, we have a lot of that in Savannah," says Thomson.
However, some are concerned that traffic will become a problem on Victory Drive. Thomson says the city and the developer are conducting a traffic study to determine how to ease traffic congestion and possibly add traffic signals and turn lanes on Victory Drive.
