Severe Weather Awareness Week starts Monday

Posted: Updated:
CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Feb. 6 to 10 is Severe Weather Awareness Week. It encourages Georgians to be prepared and have a disaster readiness set up before severe weather strikes.

Each day of the week focuses on a different weather topic:

  • Monday - Family Preparedness/NOAA Weather Radio
  • Tuesday - Thunderstorm safety
  • Wednesday - Tornado safety (statewide tornado drill/CEMA communications test)
  • Thursday - Lightning Safety
  • Friday - Flooding

In April 2011, tornadoes affected the Southeast, Midwest and northern U.S., killing 321 people, according to the Chatham Emergency Management Agency.

CEMA encourages residents to prepare their family disaster plan during Severe Weather Awareness Week. That involves discussing with family members what steps to take when severe weather occurs, having contact information, knowing evacuation plans, choosing out-of-area contacts and practicing the plan.
