EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

A man was killed just after 11:30 p.m. Saturday in a car crash while fleeing from an Effingham Co. sheriff's deputy, according to the sheriff's office.

The deputy attempted to stop Robert Carlisle, 40, of Springfield, who was driving a Ford F-150 on Central Avenue.

Carlisle fled at a high rate of speed getting up to about 80 mph and turned on Honey Ridge Road, according to deputies.

Other deputies in the area tried to set up stop sticks in effort to bring the chase to an end.

The chase lasted less than two minutes before Carlisle's vehicle struck a tree and landed in a body of water where he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol. An autopsy is scheduled to take place Monday at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab.
