After 20 years in the classroom, one special Savannah-Chatham teacher finds each year new and exciting. Maria Bashlor makes sure the students at Southwest Elementary School are aware of their assignments as she teaches gifted and advanced children.

"I love children, I love working with children," she said. "I love to coach softball and basketball and swim. Seemed like the natural thing to do."

Bashlor says becoming a teacher was an easy choice, because of the teachers she had in school. "I had a number of teachers that would say you'd be a great teacher, although at the time I didn't believe it. So students, listen to your teacher."

Teachers helped Bashlor believe in her ability and now she wants to do that for her students. "If they leave my classroom believing in themselves and believing they can accomplish anything, that's my goal," she said.

Maria Bashlor, this week's WTOC Top Teacher.
