Savannah High's Kavon Freeman was just a basketball player until his junior year. That's when he decided to give football a chance and that has paid off with a scholarship to play college football. And who knows where that will lead him.

The 6-4 tight end with great hands has only been playing football for two years but that was good enough to convince Albany State that he was worthy of a scholarship which he signed Tuesday. "Well, yes, sir, this is one of the most exciting days of my life being able to get a scholarship to go to school and don't have to pay for anything," said Freeman. "I got a scholarship to the school where I'm at and this is the most thrilling thing I've been through, so far."

He expects to play both tight end and receiver for the Rams. "I just know how to manipulate and use my speed and my size but I think I need to get a little faster."

Freeman was a basketball player but basketball coach Tim Jordan saw a lot of himself in Freeman and gave him some advice. "Well, Rick, I kind of compare Kavon to myself," said Jordan. He's a basketball player, not a football player. He really didn't play his first couple of years in high school and I know, myself I didn't play when I first came to high school but I knew they had about 70 football scholarships and maybe 12 in basketball so I decided to put my eggs into the football basket and Kavon is going through the same thing and it's paid off for him, also."

In just two seasons, Freeman grew tremendously as a player, a lot of can be attributed to his basketball experience. "It helped me in a lot of ways," said Freeman. "It helped me with my feetwork, it helped me with my passing, it helped me with my coordination and my eye awareness and everything."  Football coach David Jackson added, "I just hope he remembers his foundation and what he was taught here at Savannah High and utilize that and expand upon that at Albany State."

Freeman plans to major in sports medicine in college so he can stay connected to athletics.
