Statesboro to study intersection woes

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Pulling onto Fair Road's busier parts can be Statesboro's biggest game of chicken. The traffic especially backs up near the intersection with Zetterower Avenue and Tillman Road and often leaves drivers looking for round-a-bout routes.

"If I know I have to go somewhere during lunch, I make sure I can make a route with right turns. The more right turns the better," explained Brandon Blair, co-owner of 180 Fitness. The gym is one of the businesses in College Plaza, which anchors the corner of Zetterower and Fair.

The five lanes of Fair Road near the light have been the scene for plenty near-misses, fender-benders and worse. Left turns are tough from any direction and traffic can back up half a block.

"I think we need something done there. And if you're on a bicycle, Lord help ya. I sometimes ride my bicycle," asserted Shirley Helmley.

Statesboro City Council has hired an engineering firm to look at the intersection and see what can be done. Council member Will Britt, whose district includes the spot, hopes they can streamline the traffic and protect walkers trying to get to a nearby downtown trail.

"We're looking at what's the best thing. 'Do we want to only go right? Do we want to go left? Do we want to move a traffic light? How do we get pedestrians across that intersection as well?' All of that is going to be taken into account," Britt noted. "Nothing's off the table, a pedestrian bridge over the top."

"I have no idea how to help it, but something needs to be done," Helmley said.

In their brief discussion before their vote Tuesday, council members said they hope to get ahead of even more development coming to the intersection. Owners of Snooky's Restaurant, which opens onto Tillman near the intersection, are slated to sell the property to CVS Pharmacy for a new store that could bring even more traffic.
