Black Church Week of Prayer Kicks Off

The Asbury United Methodist Church kicked off the Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS with Praise, Dance and Song yesterday. The idea is to highlight HIV and AIDS education and awareness, and the role churches play in addressing the issue.

It's sponsored by Project Azuka, a nonprofit organization for women. The theme is "healing our people through unity and prayer."

"We want to make sure that those who are infected with HIV/AIDS, we want you to know that everyone's not against you," said Pastor Thomas Norman III. "We are standing with you, prayerfully and toe to toe, and we care."

Mayor Otis Johnson read the proclamation to begin the event. Asbury United Methodist Church has invited several guest speakers through Thursday night. The public is invited.
