Students React to SSU Baseball Shakeup

There've been some roster changes at the top at Savannah State University. Last week, the baseball team rebelled against athletic director Hank Ford. Yesterday, he resigned. The same day, the baseball team saw some of its concerns addressed. While no one was commenting from the university or the team, players were doing their talking on the field.

Miesha Garden-Hire is a fan of the baseball team. Right now, its record is seven and six. Miesha says clearing up the athletic director turmoil is just one step in putting the focus back on building a winning season. "About time," she said. "They always have fun. I mean, it's just them, they don't let little things effect them."

The team had several complaints it wanted the athletics department to address prior to the resignation of Ford. The team already has a brand new volunteer assistant coach, and vandalized equipment has been replaced, including new bats. As for the dugout and field conditions, coach Jamie Rigdon told us off camera, those problems are also being addressed.

"I'm glad to see something happening on this campus dealing with the athletic department as a whole, not just baseball," said Miesha.

Miesha also runs track. She claims, while the baseball team is moving forward, other sports teams at Savannah State are having problems similar to the baseball program's. "Now, we have to hire a new athletic director and we have to get everybody else's problems fixed," she said. "Cause everything is not fixed. It's just begun."

The university says the search for a new athletic director begins immediately. Irvin Clark will be taking over interim duties. Meanwhile, Hank Ford will be staying on with the college, but in a different capacity.
