Insurance Company Changing the Way It Covers Coast

People looking for homeowner insurance along South Carolina's coast are getting one less option. Nationwide Insurance isn't offering insurance for properties on the Palmetto State's shoreline because of concerns about claims should a hurricane come through.

Right now, entire counties have been blacked out of coverage options, but the insurance company is moving to a new format where it will let zip codes dictate who's eligible or not.

For example, Hilton Head island homes wouldn't be eligible, but someone in Sun City would be with the new rules.

Emergency management officials say it's important for people to have insurance so they can rebuild if need be. Insurance companies tend to drop certain areas every once in a while, but they don't think there will be a shortage of providers anytime soon.

"There's rumblings of legislation," explains Hilton Head Island's Emergency Management Director Jay Harter. "To maybe allow insurance companies to increase their rates, and maybe that's some way to keep them in business. Maybe that's something we've all gotta go through."

Nationwide will not stop coverage for people who've already signed up, they're just not letting new people sign up.
