Hilary DrammisWhen Sabrina Drammis of Hilton Head was named the WTOC Girls Player of the Week, we found out this young lady was much more that a basketball player.
Her family moved from Utah to Hilton Head to that Sabrina could try to improve her national ranking in tennis. "One of the reasons for moving down here was to go to Pfister and Sons Academy but I guess I just lost interest in tennis," said Sabrina.
Drammis leads her team in virtually all categories. Coach David Greenberg says that Drammis is more than a player. "She's a tremendous student, brilliant kid that excels academically," said Greenberg. "But, she also writes music, she plays instruments, dances. She has competed nationally. When she enjoys something she just really puts her heart and soul into it and seems to be able to excel."
She has turned down basketball scholarship offers to division one schools and has already been accepted at MIT... Carnegie Mellon and Emory University. "I realize that academics is what is important to me," said Drammis. "That's what I've worked hard for. I wanted to go somewhere where I can pursue that and can eventually learn something that I can help others. It's just where priorities lie."
She plans to major in computer science and draws a lot of her inspiration from her older brother who is severely autistic. "I think her brother is an inspiration to her, said Hilary Drammis, Sabrina's mother. "I think it's all made Sabrina not only an excellent athlete and excellent in school but an excellent person."
Sabrina added, "He definitely is an inspiration. Seeing what he had to face every day. That's why I want to do something and excel in academics so I can eventually help him and help other people like him. If I were to sit back and not take advantage of the gifts God has given me and not work hard for what I want to pursue it would be rude to him."
Since she misses all the skiing in Utah, Drammis is building her own slope in her back yard on Hilton Head. "Down here we obviously don't get snow, which is kind of unfortunate, and so now I'm working on it's like a backyard gym set. It's got a ramp down and then off a little jump onto a rail so I can practice and learn new tricks and such."
We can all only imagine where her life will take her but you can bet we all will be better for it.
