Oreo's attorney taking Animal Control to court

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

It's been almost two weeks since Oreo was locked up at Animal Control. Police say the American Bull Dog bit a 6 year old girl who was playing in his backyard with his food bowl.

"Oreo is being held against his will. Being held unlawfully. And we're trying to get him out," the dog's attorney Mareesa Torres said.

Torres says animal control never had the right to take Oreo in the first place. She says the officers intimindated Oreo's owners Patricia and Michael Wooten.

"They misled them and gave them misinformation. Frankly, they scared the Wootens into giving up Oreo. When the Wootens realized what they were told by Animal Control wasn't true, they wanted to get him back and they were told they couldnt," Torres said.

Torries is working with the New York based national dog law firm The Lexus Project.

She says she'll file a restraining order in court next week to prevent animal control from harming Oreo.

She also says she'll defend the dog at a hearing later this month to determine whether or not Oreo is dangerous.

Some of the dog's neighbors have said he has a violent past, but Torres insists the dog is not dangerous. She says she's determined to get him back home.

"As an attorney it's my duty and obligation to make sure the laws are upheld. We have city ordinances for a reason. I don't feel animal control has followed the right procedure here," Torres said.

The hearing will be held Feb. 21 at the Department of Health.
