Ceremony to honor new SCMPD recruits, promotions

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Twenty new Savannah-Chatham Metro recruits will be sworn in as officers and 23 long-standing officers will be promoted in a ceremony Friday.

The ceremony begins at 3 p.m. in the auditorium of the Armstrong Center at Armstrong Atlantic State University on Abercorn Street. Those being honored will be pinned by someone they have chosen.

The event marks the end of 19 weeks of training for the recruits, including six weeks at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Garden City, according to SCMPD. The new officers will then be paired with a training officer for 10 weeks before patrolling on their own.

Former Savannah Police Dept. Chief David Gellatly will be the keynote speaker.

Two captains will be promoted to major, which is the highest rank below Police Chief Willie Lovett.

Five people will be promoted to captain, two will be promoted to lieutenant and a dozen will be promoted to sergeants. One lieutenant and four sergeants were promoted in December, but their ceremony was delayed.
