WHITEMARSH ISLAND (WTOC) - Savannah Chatham Metro police addressed current crime trends on the Islands during a public crime meeting Feb. 11 at the Frank Murray Community Center on Whitemarsh Island.
Police say violent crimes like rape and homicide were on the rise in 2011 compared to the year before. However, police say auto thefts and burglaries are on the decline. Authorities also say there is an increase in air conditioning unit thefts.
A large crowd turned out for the event as police offered tips on how residents can avoid becoming a victim of crime and developing neighborhood watch programs.
Authorities say the best way for people to fight crime in their neighborhoods is to get to know their neighbor and report anything suspicious activity.
