SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Family and friends gathered to honorably retire a marine critically injured while deployed to Afghanistan.

A military retirement ceremony was held for Sgt. James Childers at the Marine Corps Reserve Building at Hunter Army Airfield Feb. 11. Childers received a certificate of appreciation for his courage, bravery and service.

Childers served in the Marines for seven years and was deployed to Iraq twice. His leg had to be amputated due to an injury while Childers was deployed in Afghanistan. He wears a prosthetic leg and had to learn how to walk again.

"I wasn't expecting such a big ceremony," says Childers. "It's a good way to end my career, a lot of memories."

Childers lives in Atlanta with his wife and is working on a degree in mechanical engineering.
